Home Ownership: Week 1

The first week in our new home proved to be more of a challenge than expected. With high hopes and paint brushes in hand we set to make this house our home. Little did we know that everything we thought would be so easy would take twice as long and cost twice as much. Optimism still abounds!

The week 1 favorite tool is hands down the crowbar. It comes in handy when removing old, built-in, ugly bookshelves and is the hands down winner for the “I wonder what’s under here” Q&A. By the way, always a good question but sometimes best to let the answer alone. In our case underneath some very old and dirty carpeting was some very old and dirty tile flooring. Being a new home owner this was interesting for the first couple of days, but once the carpet and tile was up (thank you crowbar) I had a massive amount of tile glue to deal with. Interesting thing about tile glue. My guess is that back when the house was built in the 40′s they used tar to keep the tiles on while in the 60′s something less offensive (but close). Fortunately I found something that was able to get most of the glue off of the floor (goof off – works wonders). And after much sanding and cleaning i had successfully refurbished my first hardwood floor – only 3 rooms, stairs and a hallway to go!

While i was going through my full on assault of the floors, Jenna was busily working away in the living room on painting, scraping, scrubbing and more scraping.

Probably the most important part of week 1 is that the puppies are adjusting to having a backyard quite nicely.

We bought a house!

We starting our house hunting experience back in September – or should i say Jenna started our house hunting then.   She was the catalyst and driving force behind our move to the county.

We found our home after looking at less than 10 houses.   While we still kept looking right up to the close, we started the negotiation process on our new home in New Rochelle.  The more we looked, the more we knew we had made the right choice.  The negotiations went well and was simple – especially in hindsight.  The credit union was help and processed our application quickly.  We seems to be on track to move into our new home before Christmas.

That was until we tested the oil tank in the front yard.   It turned out that the oil tank had a leak.  Neither one of us has purchased a home before so we didn’t really know what would be involved.  The owner had insurance on the oil tank so we thought this would just be a small blip on the radar and that we could still get in by Christmas – our first Christmas married and in our new home.  It was exciting to think about.

We could not have been more wrong.   The seller’s attorney told us that it would be 5-7 working days to get the situation resolved.  With this information in hand we started packing our house and adjusted our expectations that we’d be in our new home to ring in the new year!

Wrong again.  Getting information became more and more difficult to come by and it looked like we’d be moving out of our apartment in Brooklyn with no place to go. Fortunately one of Jenna’s great friends offered us her apartment for a week while she was out-of-town.  With 5-7 business days in the backs of our minds, we packed some suitcases and the dogs in the car and headed for our temporary home while our entire apartment was put in storage. Well, 5-7 business days turned in to 6 weeks. We stayed with friends, family and ultimately settled in at a corporate apartment in White Plains.

At long last our closing was scheduled for the 13th of February (we could have done it sooner but the retired seller’s crack lawyer wasn’t available). After 3 1/2 hours and a contentious, to say the least, process that almost had us walk away we closed.

Perhaps it was fitting that we moved in on Valentines Day. We are now in our new home and the personalization has begun.
